The subject of our today's conversation will be a garden plant rhododendron, planting and caring for which are filled with many pitfalls and nuances. It is worth starting with the fact that he is a typical sissy. Not everyone can survive our winters. Nevertheless, with proper care and proper farming techniques, you can achieve excellent results.
- Selecting a planting material
Selecting a planting material
It is necessary to know that there are several winter hardy species of this evergreen plant. Gardeners recommend:
- Deciduous Shlippenbach;
- Japanese rhododendron;
So, successful cultivation of a flower depends largely on where it was purchased. The optimal option will always be a specialized nursery, in which you will receive not only the necessary planting material, but also tips on caring for it.
In Russia, the optimal time for planting a bush in autumn are all months, and in the spring period - April and May. They are chosen for good reason. It is then the development of the flower ends, and the young grows stronger.
Experienced flower growers plant rhododendrons at any time, but with the condition of delaying the moment of planting from the period of flowering and budding, as the plant then spends a lot of effort, especially for building up green mass.
The flower is planted at a predetermined location, which is well protected from strong winds and intense sunlight. Before planting in the open ground, you must carefully moisten it, as well as the root system of the plant. This process is well described in numerous videos posted on the Internet.
It must be remembered that the transportation will be well endured by those rhododendrons that were abundantly watered.
To plant a flower, a planting pit will be required, which will be twice the size and depth of the root coma. It should be added a specially prepared mixture consisting of equal parts:
- heather land;
- of sphagnum peat;
- of deciduous soil;
- of overripe manure;
- of pine needles.
With this mixture it is desirable to fill the cavity with?its volume, and leave the rest for filling with soil taken from the same place. To prepare grooves for rhododendrons, gardeners are recommended not only before the planting, but also during the so-called off-season: spring, autumn.
Note the photo, where the planting of this plant is schematically shown. In the first case the rhododendron is planted too finely, in the second one it is very deep and only in the third photo on the right the plant is planted correctly.
It should be noted that the planting of the flower should take place with certain recommendations.
No less important moment during planting is the creation of a good drainage layer, which will not allow water to stagnate at the rhizome and block the flow to the oxygen flower.
Mandatory planting of the flower should include mulching 5 cm with a layer of a stock circle and subsequent abundant watering, which can ensure the soaking of the soil to a depth of up to 20 cm. Mulching can be done with the help of leaves, needles and peat. First you need to mulch and only then moisten the soil abundantly.
If the plant is planted during the flowering period, as in the photo, then it is mandatory to remove some of its buds.
When planting shrubs at a great distance from each other, they must be reinforced with pegs inserted into the ground to prevent uprooting of the unbroken plants by gusts of wind. After a certain period of time, the pegs are removed.
After the rhododendron is planted, it is necessary to provide him with proper care. In particular, the plant needs systematic spraying, top dressing and the formation of a bush. Experienced gardeners are advised near the flower to regularly remove weeds.
No special care is needed for this plant, provided that the landing is carried out correctly and mulching took place. It does not need rhododendron and in the loosening of the soil around it, which greatly simplifies the care. Such actions can damage the stability of the bush.
Relative to watering, then again, leaving will not be particularly difficult. For rooting in the first year of planting, the bush will need a certain amount of moisture. Also, he will need him on hot days. Nevertheless, about watering the rhododendrons remind themselves of the loss of the turgor and the matte shade of the leaves. It is extremely rare to spray the leaves.
To the lack of moisture, rhododendrons are particularly sensitive in the first year after planting. Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that an excess of moisture in the soil of the bush provokes insufficient supply of oxygen to the roots. In this case, the plant signals with falling and yellowing leaves. When water stagnation is necessary carefully, to avoid damage to the horse system, loosen the soil and allow the soil to dry thoroughly.
Water for irrigation must be used acidified and soft. More frequent watering is necessary for the plant in the period of active vegetation. A well-saturated shrubbery will more easily bear the winter drought.
Gardeners are cautioned to use chestnut leaves for mulching, as they decompose too much alkaline soil, and rhododendrons need acid soil. The mulching layer will depend on the height of the plant. If it is within 50 cm, then the height of this layer will be 4 to 6 cm. If the flower is much higher, then the layer of mulch should be increased to 10-15 cm. When growing a shrub to 2 m, the layer of mulch should be 30 cmIn the spring it is completely cleaned.
To ensure adequate care for the plant, care must also be taken to trim it. Genetically, the rhododendrons have the correct form of the bush. Young plants can be pricked around the central bud to give the bush the right shape. In pruning, the plant needs a very large crown. Branching branches are cut, the thickness of which in diameter is from 2 to 4 cm. All the cuttings are necessarily lubricated, if not oil paint, then garden fume, to prevent possible infection of the plant.
Rhododendrons need to be fed in the first year after planting. Fertilizers must be applied in small concentrations in a liquid form. A clear sign, indicating the need for additional feeding, will be:
- clarification of foliage;
- reduction in shoot growth;
- light attenuation;
- falling foliage;
- absence of a bookmark of buds.
The most common organic fertilizer is half-baked manure.
Rhododendron is needed in organic fertilizers, which after cultivation must be infused for several days to activate microbiological processes. From mineral fertilizers you can use superphosphate.
Before fertilizing the rhododendrons, it is necessary to thoroughly moisten the soil in order to avoid the possibility of burning the root system.
To give the soil a certain acidity, you can use:
- nitric acid or potassium sulfate;
- ammonium sulphate;
- magnesium sulphate.
In fertilizers rhododendron needs from early spring and until the beginning of the month of August.
Properly organized wintering of the plant in the future will determine the abundance of its flowering. Shelter for a bush can be made with the help of an ordinary roofing material or by creating another frame hiding, for example, as on a photo. In most cases, the garden rhododendron suffers from strong gusts of wind and / or a thick layer of snow. Many gardeners create special houses for sheltering the plant, knocking them out of polyurethane foam or polypropylene.
The day of removal of the shelter must be necessarily overcast. It should also be noted that untimely removal of the shelter can lead to the plant being rebuked. Cover it from inclement weather is best in mid-November. In this, in fact, is the care of the plant.
